Novel two dimensional water structures on Pd(111) studied by STM: Experiment and Theory

چکیده
The early stages of water growth on Pd(111) has been studied by means of low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) experiments[1]. At the lowest coverages, individual water molecules diffuse around the metal surface. Upon collision, they form dimers, trimers, tetramers, pentamers and cyclic hexamers, the latter showing the largest stability (see Figure 1.a). As the coverage is further increased, islands presenting a commensurate hexagonal honeycomb structure relative to the Pd(111) substrate are formed (Figure 1.b). After some time, the island edges end up decorated by bright features (Figure 1.c). Next, heating up the sample to 70 K leads to a restructuring of the islands (Fig. 1.d), now adopting more regular shapes which resemble either a rosette pattern (Figure 2.c) or a lace-type pattern (Figure 2.e). These pseudo-ordered structures are particularily intruiguing. They evidence that no uniform wetting occurs, as it would be expected for ice growth.

Novel water overlayer growth on Pd(111) characterized with scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of water submonolayers on Pd(111) reveal quasiperiodic and isolated adclusters with internal structure that would ordinarily be ascribed to icelike puckered hexagonal units. However, density functional theory and STM simulations contradict this conventional picture, showing instead that the water adlayers are composed mainly of flat-lying molecules arr...

متن کاملExperimental and theoretical STM imaging of xylene isomers on Pd „ 111 ...
We have performed a theoretical and experimental study of the three isomers of xylene, C6H4~CH3!2, adsorbed on Pd~111!. Using scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM!, we imaged the characteristic surface structures and investigated the molecular ordering for meta-, para-, and ortho-xylene adsorbed on Pd~111!. We used extended Hückel theory to predict the characteristic features of individual xylene...
متن کاملCoexistence of one- and two-dimensional supramolecular assemblies of terephthalic acid on Pd(111) due to self-limiting deprotonation.
The adsorption of terephthalic acid [C(6)H(4)(COOH)(2), TPA] on a Pd(111) surface has been investigated by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at room temperature. We find the coexistence of one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) molecular ordering. Our analysis i...
متن کاملRole of surface iron in enhanced activity for the oxygen reduction reaction on a Pd3Fe(111) single-crystal alloy.
Applications of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM-FCs) require a continued search for an optimal catalyst with attributes of high activity, durability, low cost, and resistance to negative effects of impurities in the fuel. Platinum-based bimetallic catalyst systems are widely utilized in PEM-FCs because of their good performance in both the cathode and the anode. Alloying with inexp...
